To satisfy this demand, Toyota has released two new hybrid versions of the RAV4 for the 2022 model year: the SE and the XSE. Both models are excellent choices, but they do have some key differences. So, which one is right for you?

Performance, Engine, and Transmission

On the performance front, both the SE and XSE models are extremely capable. However, some key differences are worth noting. One significant difference between the SE and XSE is that the SE is a plug-in hybrid while the XSE is a conventional hybrid. This means that the SE has a larger 355-volt lithium-ion battery pack that can be driven on electricity alone for shorter distances. Once the battery is depleted, it functions as a regular hybrid. The XSE, on the other hand, is a hybrid that cannot be plugged in. As such, it has a smaller 244-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack and consequently needs to be refueled more often. Both the SE and XSE come with a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder gas engine. However, the SE's engine is slightly more powerful, as it has auxiliary electric motors. These electric motors give the SE more instant torque, which is helpful when accelerating from a stop or merging onto the highway. The SE produces 302 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque, while the XSE produces 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. Both models also come equipped with a continuous variable transmission, but the XSE gets paddle shifters as standard. This means that you'll enjoy a more engaging driving experience if you opt for the XSE. However, both models come with all-wheel drive as standard, so you'll be able to take on any terrain confidently, no matter which model you choose. As for acceleration, the SE is the second fastest vehicle in the Toyota lineup. It can go from zero to 60 mph in just over five seconds. The XSE is a bit slower, taking around seven seconds to reach the same speed. In terms of towing capacity, the SE can tow up to 2500 pounds, while the XSE can manage 1750 pounds. Again, the SE comes out on top in this category. Overall, the SE and XSE models are capable vehicles and will offer you a smooth, comfortable ride no matter where you're going. However, the SE has a slight edge when it comes to performance, thanks to its more powerful engine and plug-in hybrid technology.

Range and Fuel Economy

If you're on the hunt for an eco-friendly vehicle, fuel economy is likely to be one of your main concerns. In this category, the SE and XSE models are awe-inspiring. The SE has an EPA-estimated range of 42 miles when running on electricity alone. This means that you can commute to work or run errands without using any gas at all. When the battery is depleted, the SE has a combined fuel economy of 94 MPGe, which is very impressive for an SUV and more than twice the combined fuel economy of the XSE. On the flip side, the XSE has a combined fuel economy of 40 MPGe. This is slightly lower than the SE, but it's still very impressive. What's more, the XSE has a slightly higher range than the SE when running on gasoline alone. Its EPA-estimated range is 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the SE has a range of 40 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. So, which model is the best choice when it comes to range and fuel economy? If your daily commute is under 42 miles and your primary concern is fuel economy, then the SE is the clear winner. However, if you spend most of your time on the highway and have no access to charging, the XSE is the better choice.

Interior and Tech Features

Regarding interior and tech features, the SE and XSE models of the RAV range are very well equipped. Both trims come standard with a 7-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker audio system. However, the SE doesn't have as many features as the XSE. For instance, the XSE adds a 9-inch touch-screen display, an 11-speaker JBL audio system, and a digital rearview mirror with a panoramic view monitor. The XSE also comes standard with high-end tech features that are optional on the SE, such as front and rear parking sonars, which make parking in tight spaces a breeze — talk about convenience. Overall, the XSE is the better choice regarding interior and tech features. It has a more luxurious feel and comes with high-end tech features that are optional on the SE.

Passenger and Cargo Space

Tundra Capstone This flagship truck includes top-of-the-line features, including a luxurious interior, 22-inch wheels, and standard power running boards. Like the TRD Pro, it only comes in a four-wheel drive crew cab hybrid with a 5.5-foot bed. The towing capacity for the Capstone is 10,340 pounds. Alongside the standard infotainment and safety features, this trim has 16-inch steel wheels with all-season tires. Optional upgrades include alloy wheels, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. The Corolla SE trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels for the sedan and 16-inch wheels for the hatchback. Other new features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters, and proximity keyless entry. You can opt for a nine-speaker stereo or a moonroof to create a more upscale feel in your cabin. The XSE trim has synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a digital gauge cluster. The hatchback version steps up to the 18-inch alloy wheels that come with the SE sedan and also boasts dual-zone climate control. The GR Corolla is available in three trims: the Core, Circuit Edition, and Morizo Edition. The Core shares many features with the Corolla SE but adds front sport seats, fog lights, upgraded brakes, and sport tires. It has three exhausts, widened fender flares, and lightweight 18-inch wheels. The Circuit Edition includes performance upgrades such as hood vents, a carbon fiber roof, and front and rear limited-slip differentials.
